MS Dhoni Unavailable For Jharkhand’s Vijay Hazar Trophy Campaign
MS Dhoni will not ply his trade for Jharkhand in their knockout games of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Jharkhand will take on Maharashtra in their quarterfinal clash on Monday (October 15) without their stalwart MS Dhoni. The veteran India batsman was not present at the first nets the team had at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
Earlier this week, chief selector MSK Prasad had said Dhoni would play the tournament.
“He [Dhoni] will play the knock-outs. About Ambati Rayudu, I need to confirm,” Prasad had said while announcing the squad for the ODI series against West Indies.
However, Dhoni has surprisingly made himself unavailable for the competition. Jharkhand coach Ravi Kumar said Dhoni decided to give the game a miss because of the team’s good form this season. Jharkhand have topped Group C with 32 points after winning 7 of their nine games.
“Dhoni feels that it would not be fair for him to join us at this stage, given that the team has done so well and reached the quarter-final stage in his absence. He does not want to upset the team balance,” Kumar said.
Well, playing in the domestic circuit would have been a better option for Dhoni considering his recent lean patch with the bat. In 15 ODIs this year, the World Cup-winning skipper has scored just 225 runs at an average of 28.12. At a time, when India’s middle-order is far from being settled, Dhoni’s struggles have made the matters worse.
In the Asia Cup, he batted in four innings, scoring 77 runs with an average of 19.25 and a strike rate of 62.09.
Meanwhile, while Dhoni has decided to stay away, Rohit Sharma will be part of the Mumbai XI that takes on Bihar in the first quarter-final on Sunday. Ambati Rayudu will also lead Hyderabad in their knockout clash against Andhra.
