Mumbai Selectors Surprised with Ajinkya Rahane

The Mumbai selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar is surprised by the fact that Ajinkya Rahane – who is not a part of the Indian team in the ongoing T20I series against Australia – had made himself unavailable for their first Ranji Trophy game before the selectors announced the squad for their opening encounter against Madhya Pradesh.

Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, though said he was already informed about the matter but sources have revealed a different story, as reportedly, the selectors are surprised with Rahane, a dedicated cricketer, taking this step,

“Frankly, the selectors were surprised, rather shocked and disappointed about it. They didn’t expect this from a dedicated player like him. India’s last ODI, against Australia, was on October 1. He was dropped for the ongoing T20 International series against Australia, and the first ODI against New Zealand is scheduled to be held in Mumbai on October 22. Generally, a two-week break is enough for a player. With Mumbai missing a few top players, Rahane’s presence would’ve really helped,” a source told TOI.

The news wouldn’t have this big impact if Mumbai had players like Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur and Dhawal Kulkarni in their ranks. All the four players are a part of different BCCI teams to face New Zealand.

Iyer, Shaw and Thakur are a part of India A for the unofficial One day series against New Zealand A while Kulkarni is part of Board President’s XI squad to face New Zealand in the two practice games ahead of the international fixtures. Shaw and Iyer will also join him in BCCI President’s XI squad.

Mumbai, the 41-time champions, were in a desperate need of a senior player and addition of Rahane could have been a big boost for the side, but they were left empty-handed when he delivered his message not to play for the state in their season opener.

The success of the team will heavily depend on skipper Aditya Tare, vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav and youngster Jay Bista, who has had played a handful of first-class games for the state. The bowling department though is inexperienced, including Vijay Gohil, who shone in the Duleep Trophy recently.

Madhya Pradesh, on the other hand, have likes of Devender Bundela, Ishwar Pandey, Naman Ojha and Harpreet Singh Bhatia in their ranks. Mumbai will go as an underdog in this game and need a miracle to stun their opposition.
