Murali Vijay Aims For A Place In 2019 World Cup Team

Murali Vijay is now being considered as a Test specialist but at the start of his career, he was one of the players who was deemed to be a specialist in all formats of the game but with the span of time, he restricted the game to only one format and failed to emulate his Test success in limited overs cricket.

The regular opener for team India in Test cricket played his last ODI in the year 2015 under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane. The same series, he played his last T20I as well. At present, he is considered to be a Test player only with no intent to play limited overs cricket but Vijay thinks the other way. A member of team India in 2013 Champions Trophy, Vijay is eyeing a spot in the team for the 2019 World Cup, to be played in England,

“When I started playing Test cricket, they said I’m a T20 player or ODI cricketer. When I started performing in Tests, they said I’m a Test player and that I couldn’t play the other formats. People have their own views, but I don’t have the time to analyse those. For now, my priority is to win overseas Tests for India. I feel my chances in the limited-overs are yet to come. But my aim is to be part of that Indian team for the 2019 World Cup in England. I’m trying to break the doors and play all three formats,” Vijay told TOI.

Not to everyone’s surprise, Vijay has a century in IPL and was go to man for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2012 when he scored a ton in the second qualifier. The century included 15 fours and four sixes.

Vijay was an integral part of team India during the long home season during which he played 12 out of the 13 Tests, with the only missing game coming against Australia in Bangalore, where his statemate Abhinav Mukund replaced him in the playing XI. Vijay still played the remaining two games and later revealed that he was playing the games with a broken wrist. Though the right-handed batsman is recovering well from the wrist surgery,

“It’s been two and a half months since the wrist operation. I have been training hard to get back to full fitness. The injury has to have natural healing. I have had four net sessions with the basics, playing under-arm stuff with a tennis ball. I’m definitely focussing on the Lanka series. I will go to NCA soon and only after that I will know the status.”

Vijay is in line to make a comeback for the Sri Lanka series along with KL Rahul. Both Vijay and Rahul missed the tenth season of IPL due to respective injuries and would be vying to make a comeback to international cricket.

At last, on being asked to comment on the rift between Kumble and Kohli, Vijay said that he was not aware of what has transpired in the team in his absence and did comment on the matter,

“I haven’t yet come back into the team. I was in the US at that time with family. I wasn’t aware of what’s happening. Kumble has done a lot of great things himself and for the team. He was a pretty good coach. Both Kumble and Kohli are great contributors to Indian cricket and they know what they are doing. Both are great individuals to handle and it’s been fantastic working with them.”
