The Story

Murali Vijay, the Test specialist, is currently on an injury forced sabbatical trying to recover from the wrist injury that he suffered during the home season 2016-17 in which India played 13 Tests against New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia.

Overall, he had a wonderful time with the bat and ended as the fourth-highest run-getter for India in those 12 Tests, scoring 771 runs at 36.71 with three centuries and fifties respectively. But, the prolonged time playing Test cricket took a toll on his fitness as he began facing problems with his shoulder before his wrists eventually brought bigger troubles.

As of now, Vijay is readying up for a comeback after undergoing successful surgery in London.

A unique way of recovery

Vijay is close to 100 per cent fitness. But, with India not playing any Test series immediately, he decided to make most of the free time in between and engaged himself in some surfing activity.

He was at the Covelong surfing, music and yoga festival, around 20 km from Mahabalipuram on Saturday.

“It’s the rush of adrenaline. When you are playing high-pressure games, you cannot do exactly what you think, you just don’t have the time — much like countering and conquering a wave. You keep your mind blank, be more reactive than proactive,” Vijay said.

Along with his at the refreshing event was South African legend Jonty Rhodes, who is also known for his love for surfing.

“He is a master. I got a chance to talk to him a little about surfing, pick his brains, said Vijay speaking about Rhodes”

Vijay also assured that he will return to full fitness. He recently made an appearance in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

“I am feeling much better, have been practising and training hard. I am on the right path at the moment. The grind I am going through now is teaching me to be better as a person and as a cricketer.”

His next assignment will most likely be the upcoming series in South Africa. Speaking about it, Vijay said, “When the series gets closer I will be there mentally.”

“It is always a good feeling when you are coming out of an injury and people are supporting you.”
