The legendary spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan is the only cricketer to have 800 Test wickets. Although it has been over a decade since he last played a Test match, his record standstill. Australia’s former great spinner Shane Warne is the second-highest Test wicket-taker snaring 708 wickets, who is also a mile away from the former Sri Lankan cricketer’s record.
Muttiah Muralitharan’s last Test match was against India in July 2010 where he scalped eight wickets to complete his 800 Test wickets. However, he had to toil hard to get his last scalp.
Muttiah Muralitharan’s interesting story with Ishant Sharma:
While talking to Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Youtube show DRS with Ash, Muralitharan recalled an interesting story with Ishant Sharma when he was waiting for the last wicket to complete 800 Test wickets.
Sri Lanka had opted to bat first and had put a huge score of 520 runs on the board in their first innings. On the other hand, India had an early fall of wickets because of Muttiah’s masterpiece. He registered his last five-wicket haul, including the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni.
Team India was forced to follow on and Muttiah had the chance to get those three wickets to reach the unique feat. He got the two easy wickets of Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh but he was still to get one wicket. Then, the spinner urged Ishant Sharma, who was patiently building up his innings, to give up his wicket.
But the Indian pacer strictly disagreed to do so. However, at last, Muttiah got the wicket of Pragyan Ojha to get the 800th Test wicket.
“During the water break I spoke to Ishant Sharma and told him ‘you have been around for too long. Just try to whack one and get out. You are the last wicket. So staying around is not going to change things. Nor are you scoring runs. At least give me my 800th wicket’.
“He said no way he was going to do that. It was luck that I got Pragyan out,” Muttiah Muralitharan said
As far as that Test match is concerned, Sri Lanka registered the win by 10 wickets after chasing 96 runs target.
