The former England Nasser Hussain said that he hated Sourav Ganguly during his cricketing days not only because they were arch-rivals but because Ganguly used to make him wait during the toss.
The rivalry between Nasser Hussain and Sourav Ganguly is well evident to cricket fans. The Natwest Trophy 2020 grand-finale is the most memorable battle between the two former captains. During the clash, Hussain scored a hundred but it went into vain as India’s end-moment partnership between Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh led them to lift the trophy.
Sourav Ganguly used to make me wait for the toss: Nasser Hussain
Nasser Hussain recalls his old cricketing days and said that he doesn’t like Sourav because he was late during the toss. But his perspective changed after they started working off-field and now he enjoys the company of the former Indian captain. However, Hussain said that the former Indian captain was still late during commentary.
“Sourav’s like that. When I played against Sourav, I hated him, he used to make me wait for the toss every single time and I’ll be like, Ganguly, its 10.30, we have to toss. But now I work with him for the last decade on commentary, he’s such a nice, calm, he’s still late for his commentary stints, but he is a lovely bloke. And that’s the way cricketers should be. When you play with him or against him, you don’t like him and when you meet up with him later in life, they’re nice people,” Nasser Hussain said.
Nasser Hussain also credited Ganguly for making India a tough and aggressive side who were passionate for attaining victories.
“I have always said, and this is a generalisation, but I have always said about Ganguly, that he made India a tougher side. Playing against a Ganguly side, you knew you were in a battle, you knew that Ganguly understood the passion of Indian cricket fans and it wasn’t just a game of cricket. It was more important than a game of cricket,” he said.
Nasser Hussain has represented England in 96 Test matches and 88 ODIs. He is counted among the successful Test captains.
