Ashes 2017/18: Nathan Lyon is the Best Spinner in the World – John Davison
The Australia spinner Nathan Lyon, whose Test career was at stake at the start of this year has had a tremendous 2017 with the ball and is currently the highest-taker with 57 scalps after having successful stints with the Aussie team in the subcontinents.
He continued his rich vein of form in the first two Ashes Test and had picked up 11 wickets.
According to John Davison, who had worked with Lyon in the past decade stated Lyon is currently the best spinner in the world.
“He’s the best spin bowler in the world… he’s got three subcontinent spinners above him in the world rankings, but they’re playing over 50 percent of their matches in spin-friendly conditions,” he was heard saying to the reporters in Perth.
He has been a crucial member for the Australian team since his debut in 2011, although he was undervalued by the public and also even by Australian cricket selectors, who have tried for other alternatives over the years.
“I think he’s been thrown under the bus a little bit, in terms of when we went through that little bad period 12 months ago as a team,” he added. I don’t think he was actually bowling as badly as his figures may have suggested back against South Africa and Sri Lanka (in 2016), but the fact we’re putting the opposition under more pressure helps the bowlers massively,” Davison further stated.
Davison feels Lyon was a complete bowler with added weaponry in his kitty. Davison further believes Lyon can only now get better and better, as he has got more control over his stock delivery.
Although the third Test is getting underway from December 14 in Perth, the main attention is on WACA, where it will be a bouncy and seaming pitch. Davison further admitted Lyon will be one first pick in those conditions and will be one of the major factors.
“I think Nathan’s greatest attribute is the bounce that he gets and there’s always a nice breeze to bowl into at the WACA so (he gets) good shape in the air,” he said. “So, I’d think he’d be one of the first picked,” he signed off.
