Former Indian cricketer turned commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu has landed into trouble. The Income Tax Department on Thursday seized his two bank accounts for the non-payment of taxes. His tax dues stand at Rs 52 lakhs. Further expenses are to be made towards dress expenses (Rs 28, 38, 405), tour and traveling expenses 9Rs 38, 24, 282), salary expense (Rs 47, 11, 400) and petrol and diesel expenses amounting to Rs 17,80,358.
The Income Tax Department understood the fact that Sidhu had failed to provide the documentary evidence as he didn’t have the bills or invoices in support of his claim during the process of further assessments. The authenticity of the transactions could not be established properly with 30% of the total expenses disowned to ensure smooth prevention of leakage of revenue.
‘The assessee had gone in to appeal against the order on January 17 last year, but the Commissioner of Income-tax (Appeals) or CIT (A) passed the order favouring the revenue and not provided any relief to the assessee, as he had failed to provide any documentary evidence in support of his claim,’ the official statement said.
The former Indian opener played some crucial knocks for India during his international career. It was his shoulder injury in 1994 which paved the way for the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar to open the innings in ODI’s. Tendulkar had never to look back and established himself as the best ODI batsman of his generation.
