All You Need To Know About Supreme Court’s Verdict On BCCI: 6 Points

In a stern decision taken by the Supreme Court, BCCI President Anurag Thakur was expelled from his position along with BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke. The Supreme Court took the hard hitting decision after it was found out that the Thakur-led BCCI didn’t comply to the norms and recommendations of the Lodha Panel.

The Lodha Panel, appointed by the Supreme Court, had recently suggested a series of guidelines for the BCCI to abide to, which mainly included the divorce between political entities and the individuals managing cricket. For instance, several members of the Bhartiya Janta Party hold influential positions within the BCCI. Despite the recommendations, Thakur, himself a member of the BJP, didn’t take any measure to abide to the policies. As a result, the Supreme Court validated that Thakur ceased to exist as the BCCI boss.

Post the evaluation by the Supreme Court on Monday, former Chief Justice of India RM Lodha spoke to the press. “This is a logical consequence. Once the reforms were accepted, it had to be implemented. There were obstructions, the timeline wasn’t followed and it had to happen. As long as the Supreme Court order passed on 18 July stands, they had to follow it. This is a victory of game of cricket. Administrators come and go. The game will flourish, that I’m sure of.”

Chief Justice T.S. Thakur and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud, the three judge panel, issued a notice to Anurag Thakur, seeking why the latter shouldn’t be held guilty for perjury charges and not tried in a criminal prosecution.

1. The Supreme Court mentions that for the time being, a committee of eminent personalities would be appointed in order to ensure the smooth functioning of the BCCI on a day to day basis.

2. All State cricket boards will now come directly under the centralized BCCI body.

3. Till the actual committee of eminent personalities is formed, the Supreme Court stressed that the senior most Vice President should take over as the President and the Joint Secretary will replace Ajay Shirke.

4. All BCCI administrators, excluding the now axed Anurag Thakur and Ajay Shirke, will work only as per the guidelines and recommendations as put forward by the Lodha panel.

5. When the main committee is formed, the Lodha panel will be in charge of the actual policy making for the BCCI. 

6. Post the formulation of the committee, the administrators are expected to work under the Lodha panel and report directly.
