In the previous two matches, India had played two different combinations after in-form opener KL Rahul was injured in the first Test. Gautam Gambhir was recalled in the team but out of form opener Shikhar Dhawan to partner Murali Vijay at the top. However, he too sustained an injury in the second Test and has been ruled out of the next match which means that a new pair will once open for India in Indore.

Karun Nair has been called to replace Dhawan but it is expected that Gambhir will get the nod to play. While he is undoubtedly one of the best players in the country, he might struggle after returning to action after two years. The pressure of performance might get the better of him and New Zealand can once again trouble the Indian top-order.
