The New Zealand Cricket Board has brought 21 players under the central contract for the 2016-2017 international season, the NZC announced on Tuesday (June 14)
This season young and talented spinner Ish Sodhi, who earned a Test call last week, and much-improvised batsman Colin Munro returned to a central contract of the NZC.
Sodhi has last played for his country in 2014 when New Zealand was turning the United Arab Emirates. Now he called up for South Africa and Zimbabwe tour in July.
Among the surprise names are Henry Nicholls and George Worker who are also granted contracts for the one year season.
The inclusion of 21 players came after Brendon McCullum and his brother Nathan’s retirement from international cricket.
New Zealand’s World Cup semifinal hero Grant Elliott is a big name who left out from the list as he is only available for T20 Internationals, having retired from Test and ODI formats.
Munro like Sodhi was contracted in 2014-15 but missed out last year, has struggled to break into the side of the longer format.
The left-handed batsman has played outstanding cricket in 2014 and 2015. His 14 ball half century did reputation to his batting.
“After missing out last year, Ish and Colin have both worked extremely hard on their game, as we saw with their performances for us in the shorter formats this summer,” said Gavin Larsen, the New Zealand selector. “They thoroughly deserve their contracts.”
“When we’ve brought new players into the group, we’ve been really happy with how they’ve adapted and performed on the international stage,” said Larsen. “Henry and George have made bright starts to their Blackcaps careers and we look forward to watching their ongoing development.”
New Zealand Cricket has brought these players under the contract looking 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup in England. So they want to prepare for the two big ODI tournaments from now.
