The annual update by the International Cricket Council (ICC) saw India slip to the fourth position, two places demotion from the original second position that they held before the latest revaluation. The new system makes sure that the recent form of the teams is given more importance in the rankings, and older records are phased out.
Pakistan and England were the two team that benefitted from India’s declines as they rose up in the list. While all shakeup happened in the top five, New Zealand remained immune to any change and retained their top position.
India faced the slump after having dropped six points which saw them end with 118 points to their credit, three less than Pakistan and England, who stand tied with 121 points. England, however, above Pakistan on the basis of a fraction of a point.
India played only two series and had a mixed bags of result. Their first win came against West Indies in Florida in August 2016 which ended in a 1-1 tie. This was followed by a 2-1 win over England earlier this year.
The teams at the 5th, 6th and the 7th position are separated by just a single point. South Africa occupies the fifth position with 111 points.
Australia also moved a step ahead, replacing current champions West Indies at the sixth position with 110 points. The Calypso Kings, who won the World T20 trophy last year, are just a point below the Aussies with 109 points.
Sri Lanka who recently drew level with Bangladesh in the two-match series at home, suffered for the underperformance as they experienced no improvement in the rankings, sitting at the eighth position. Afghanistan is currently at ninth and Bangladesh follows them at the 10 position with 78 points.
Australia, being the host nation, and the next nine highest ranked teams will automatically qualify for the 2020 World T20, the seventh edition of the tournament.
The bottom-ranked eight teams or say the associates will get an opportunity to participate in the event after participating the ICC World T20 Qualifiers in 2019, where they will be joined by the regional qualifiers. A total of six more teams will join the first ten to complete the 16-team set-up.
