New Zealand vs India 3rd ODI : Five turning points

India beat New Zealand by 7 wickets in the third ODI match played at PCA Stadium, Mohali just finished a few minutes ago. It was a good display of bowling by the Indian bowlers to restrict New Zealand team. Kohli played a match winning knock remaining not out on 154 which helped India to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

  1. Good quick fire start by New Zealand openers

India won the toss for the third time in a row and elected to bowl first. The New Zealand openers especially Martin Guptil who looked out of form in the entire series played some brilliant shots of Pandya bowling which put the pressure back on India. Martin Guptil was severe on bowls which were pitched up. In the first six overs New Zealand openers put the Indian bowling attack under some pressure. Martin Guptil was dismissed by Umesh Yadav for 27 off 21 balls. In the first 10 overs, New Zealand scored 64 for 1.

  1. Quick wickets halt New Zealand progress

At one stage New Zealand were 153 for 2 with Taylor and Latham at the crease. After that Amit Mishra, Kedar Jadhav and Bumrah just changed the complexion of the match. Amit Mishra picked the wicket of Ross Taylor, Corey Anderson was dismissed by Kedar Jadhav, Ronchi was also dismissed by Amit Mishra, Tom Latham, Mitchell Santer and Tim Southee was dismissed which put New Zealand under tremendous pressure. From a position of posting a huge total, they lost 6 wickets in space of 46 runs. New Zealand was 199 for 8 in 37.5 overs.

  1. Great partnership between Neesham and Henry for the 9th wicket

The 9th wicket partnership between Neesham and Henry played some excellent strokes. At the end of 40 overs, New Zealand was 211 for 8. Matt Henry and Neesham just showed the other batsmen of New Zealand how to play on this wicket. Both players took on the Indian bowlers. Neesham who did not play the second ODI came back into the team and made sure that New Zealand scored quick runs. Matt Henry also gave good support to him. Neesham completed his half-century off 44 balls. Both of them put on 84 runs for the 9th wicket. Neesham was dismissed for 57 while Henry was dismissed remained not out on 39. New Zealand scored 285 runs.

  1. Partnership between Kohli and Dhoni steadied the Indian innings

The Indian team lost two early wickets of Rahane and Rohit Sharma  . Dhoni promoted himself to number 4 in the batting order. Kohli and Dhoni looked in control playing excellent strokes of the New Zealand bowlers. Dhoni played excellent strokes off the pacers and spinners. The dew also helped the Indian batsmen which made the runs scoring easily. Dhoni and Kohli completed their half centuries in 59 and 49 balls respectively.  Dhoni looked in great touch and Kohli made the work easy for India. Both of them put on 151 for the third wicket. MS Dhoni was dismissed for well-made 80.

  1. Kohli’s brilliant knock

Kohli came to the crease after the fall of Rahane wicket. He was dropped by the score of 6 runs. After that, he dominated the New Zealand bowlers and just showed his class. Kohli completed his half-century off 49 balls. After completing his fifty he played well with running between wickets and also hitting the balls into the gaps. His century came off just 104 balls. He played with good intent and Manish Pandey gave him full support. Kohli remained not out on 154 which helped India to chase down this target with 10 balls to spare.
