Nicholas Pooran of Kings XI Punjab, who hit a six in the last ball of KXIP’s innings against Royal Challengers Bangalore revealed he regarded dashing batsman teammate Chris Gayle as the greatest T20 batsman currently.
He revealed what was going in his mind as he faced the last ball of the 20th over when a run was required for victory with KXIP at 171/2 with Chris Gayle being run out in the penultimate delivery. He said that KXIP players in the dugout are usually in a different mood when Chris Gayle is batting at one end.
Nicholas Pooran: Chris Gayle Is Greatest T20 Batsman Who Gives Team Winning Chances When He Is Batting
Nicholas Pooran said it was nice to see Chris Gayle scoring a half-century after starting slowly which is quite understandable considering he hasn’t played cricket for a while as he missed the last seven matches for KXIP and was playing in KXIP’s 8th match.
Nicholas Pooran was unsure what to do as he faced the last ball but hit it for a six to cross the finishing line for KXIP as they defeated RCB again.
In a post-match conversation with teammate Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran said, “For me, Chris is the greatest who has played the game. When he is batting, you always have a chance of winning the game.”
“Honest answer is that a million things were going through my mind. I wasn’t clear what I was going to do. At that moment, one fielder looks like 20 fielders to you,” recalled Pooran.
“I never want to be in that position again, to be honest,” admitted Pooran.
He said he was just glad to get the two points for his team KXIP which is regardless of the manner he got the points. Both the wins for KXIP have come against RCB, while they have lost six matches. They are the bottom-placed franchise with only four points in the bag, but the addition of Chris Gayle will give them an advantage.
Besides, KL Rahul is the leading run-scorer with 448 runs in eight matches averaging 74.66 while Mayank Agarwal is 2nd in the list with 382 runs averaging 44.75.
Chris Gayle Returns With A Half Century
Chris Gayle had last played in January 2020 in Bangladesh Premier League at Dhaka after the epidemic started resulting in cancellations and postponements of different major tournaments. IPL 2020 too was postponed and moved abroad to UAE after rising corona cases in India. In limited overs, Chris Gayle represented West Indies in 2019 while his last test came in 2014.
Chris Gayle, who was a member of RCB in the past moved to KXIP in 2018 and averaged a shade over 40 in both 2018 and 2019. He holds the record for the highest individual score of 175* and also has hit the maximum number of sixes and maximum centuries.
Chris Gayle scored 53 off 45 balls and was well supported by KL Rahul who scored an unbeaten 61 and Mayank Agarwal who scored 45 off 25 balls.
