ToggleHarmanpreet Kaur has been in the news ever since her outburst during the third and final ODI between India women and Bangladesh women in Dhaka after she was given out LBW much to her dismay and this led to her hitting the stumps with her bat on the way out.
Later Harmanpreet Kaur was alleged to have disrespected the Bangladeshi captain Nigar Sultana and had some harsh words for the two umpires, slamming them for atrocious decision-making during the series. Even her Bangladeshi counterpart said that the Indian captain should’ve shown some manners.
It was reported that the ICC was planning to nip this in the bud and fine Harmanpreet 75% of her match fees and also add four demerit points to her record. Out of the three demerit points that Harmanpreet Kaur will receive, two will be for her on-field actions after her dismissal, while one will be sanctioned for her open criticism of the level of umpiring in the presentation ceremony.
Harmanpreet Kaur Should Have Been More Selective With Her Choice Of Words: Anjum Chopra
Former India skipper Anjum Chopra, who represented India in 157 matches (12 Tests, 127 ODIs and 18 T20Is), 41 of those as captain, spoke in detail about Harmanpreet Kaur’s actions and words in an interview with Hindustan Times and said that the current Indian skipper should’ve been more careful.
“When the aggression goes away and she becomes calm I’m sure she would look back and agree that she needed to be more careful in showing her disagreement. There’s no harm in voicing your displeasure, but it’s how and when you do it. She should have been more selective with her choice of words too,” Chopra said.
“Why did it come down to the Indian captain going to the post-match presentation and voicing her displeasure? It could have been communicated in a better way. How did the situation scale up to this? The Indian team not playing up to the mark can be a cause of their disappointment but that could have been kept within the dressing room. Going out in public like this (was not proper),” she added.
India’s women’s team had lost an ODI to Bangladesh for the first time in history during this series.
