No IPL For National Coaches, BCCI To Give Two-Year Contracts

In an attempt to end the much-debated conflict of interests in Indian cricket, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has decided to give two-year contracts to everyone related to the national team. The proposed two-year year contract effectively ends any chances of national coaches plying their trade in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

Former India skipper Rahul Dravid has been in the eye of storm for quite some time now for mentoring Delhi Daredevils for the last couple of seasons despite being the India ‘A’ coach. However, Dravid will now have to choose one among the two, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to hand out two-year contracts to the national coaches and the staff members.

“Now all contracts will be for two years,” CoA chairman Vinod Rai was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The CoA had held a meeting in New Delhi on Monday (June 11) to discuss the topic. Another CoA member explained that the decision has been taken in accordance with the Lodha Committee recommendations.

“Any new contract that the BCCI enters into will have to comply with the Lodha reforms. It can’t be in conflict. And the Lodha Committee recommendation clearly says that the national contracts should be of (at least) 12 months. So 10 months for the national team and two months with the IPL can no longer work,” he explained.

Ramachandra Guha, the famous historian who recently resigned from the CoA, had lashed out at the BCCI’s functioning in his resignation letter and made an observation on conflict of interest in the case of Rahul Dravid. He had also taken an aim on legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar by alleging that the former India skipper had a conflict of interest in his working as BCCI commentator when he also had stakes in Professional Management Group (PMG).

Meanwhile, Vinod Rai also said that Anil Kumble, subject to his willingness, can accompany India to West Indies for the limited-overs series since the Cricket Advisory Committee cannot select the new coach in time.

“Coach selection has been entrusted to the CAC which selected Anil Kumble last year for a one-year contract. Now the process has to be followed. But since the process has been delayed, Kumble, subject to his accepting, will be there for the West Indies tour,” Rai said.

“The CAC is meeting in London to decide upon the road ahead,” he added
