‘I Am Not Surprised By Australia’s Downfall, The Cracks Have Started To Appear’

Former Australian cricketer and assistant coach Steve Rixon has claimed that he was not ‘surprised’ by Australia’s recent downfall in Test cricket and revealed that the slump was long time coming.

The team from Down Under is going through one on their worst periods in the game. They have now lost five Tests in a row including the two huge losses at home against South Africa.

Rixon, who was a part of Australia’s coaching staff from 2011 to 2014, said: “I’m not surprised where it’s all got to. That’s something that was probably there and the cracks have started to appear. It’s not an issue to me at the moment. I’m just worried about what I do here (with Pakistan). I’m not too concerned what they do there.”

The former cricketer is currently plying his trade for the Pakistani team and said he is not interested anymore in becoming Australia’s head coach if Darren Lehmann is sacked.

“In the past, I would have. I don’t think I’d be too concerned about it now,” he said. “Certainly, not in the process, I’ve had to go through in the last couple of times at it.”

Meanwhile, there are speculations that Pakistan might become the first Asian country to win a Test series Down Under when they visit the country in December for a three-match Test series. When Rixon was asked whether Misbah-ul-Haq’s men are fancying their chances, he said:“If you keep on swapping and changing, you’ve got a lot of vulnerability in your ranks and a lot of uncertainty. If they wish (to drop lots of players) for the next series against us, I’d be very happy for them to do that.”

However, he backed the Aussies to sort out their problems soon and expected them to be difficult to beat in familiar conditions.

“They’ll come through it. It’s just how they’re handled and the way it’s handled, which is probably the key,” Rixon said. “That might be where the problems might lie.”
