An U-19 World Cup, one season of IPL and first full Ranji Trophy season and Rishabh Pant forced his way into the Indian team riding on a belligerent show. The rookie smashed 972 runs in the ongoing season of Ranji Trophy in just 12 innings at a sky-towering strike-rate of 107.28. He entered the record books when he smashed the fastest ever century in the history of Ranji Trophy, which came against Jharkhand off just 48 deliveries. Pant also smashed run a ball triple-century against Maharashtra at the Wankhede stadium. Through these performances, he knocked selectors’ door and they had no choice but to pick him.
On learning the news of his inclusion in the Indian team, an ecstatic Rishabh Pant said this is an opportunity for him to learn from former India captain and wicket-keeper batsman M.S. Dhoni, “I have been trying to learn from Dhoni bhai since a long time. Now that I have a chance, I will get to learn a lot about wicketkeeping. He will also improve the mindset.”
“Whoever gets picked for India in any format will be happy. There are preferences for the three formats but my coach wants me to play Test cricket and I too want to achieve that,” he added.
It’ll be a opportunity for him to play under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and learn some wicket-keeping skills from M.S Dhoni, probably the best in international cricket currently. This will be a chance for Pant to glean benefits Dhoni’s presence as we do not know when the latter calls it quits from international cricket and then it might be Rishabh Pant, who’ll have to step up for a long time to come.
