Nuwan Zoysa and Avishka Gunawardene Charged by ICC After Breaching Anti-Corruption Code 1

Former Sri Lanka cricketers Nuwan Zoysa and Avishka Gunawardene have tainted the reputation of Sri Lanka cricketer after they were charged on several counts of breaching the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption code.

Nuwan Zoysa was a former left-arm medium pacer for Sri Lanka who appeared in 30 Tests and 95 ODI’s for Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Gunawardene was a left-handed top order batsman who also had a fair experience of playing for Sri Lanka. The former left-arm fast bowler has been charged for breaching four counts of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) Corruption Code for Participants in relation to the T10 League in 2017.

Meanwhile, former Sri Lanka opener Avishka Gunawardene who appeared in 61 ODI’s and 6 Tests for Sri Lanka was charged on two counts. Both the former cricketers were involved in different coaching roles. After the allegations on Zoysa and Gunawardene, they might be barred from coaching any teams in the near future.

The charges of Nuwan Zoysa are:

Article 2.1.1 – for being party to an agreement to influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspect(s) of a match.

Article 2.1.4 – Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1.

Article 2.4.4 – Failing to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct under the Code.

Article 2.4.6 – Failing or refusing, without compelling justification to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the ACU in relation to possible Corrupt Conduct under the Code

The former left-arm pacer was suspended by the ICC after breaching three counts of ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code. The decision is still pending. However the provisional suspension remains in full force stated an ICC release on Friday, 10th May.

The charges of Avishka Gunawardene are:

Article 2.1.4 – Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1.

Article 2.4.5 – Failing to disclose to the ACU (without unnecessary delay) full details of any incident, fact, or matter that comes to the attention of a Participant that may evidence Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code by another Participant.

Both the former players have two weeks time from 9th May to respond to the charges levied against them stated a media release by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
