Sri Lanka Team has been fined a point and 20% of the match fees in the ongoing ICC  Super League cycle for their slow over-rate in the first ODI against New Zealand at Auckland. Sri Lanka’s direct qualification chance for the ODI World Cup looks slim with the 2nd ODI against New Zealand washed due to the rain.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the fine on Dasun Shanaka’s side after they failed to complete their full quota of overs in time. Sri Lanka skipper Shanaka pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the proposed sanction by the match referee

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time”. ICC Said In a Statement

Coming into the series, in the 1st ODI New Zealand made a stunning win in the opening match over Sri Lanka with a thumping 198 runs victory at Auckland’s Eden Park on Saturday and the 2nd ODI was washed due to the rain, the third and final ODI is scheduled to take place at Hamilton on Friday.

Sri Lanka Team still has one match left to play in the series. They must look to win the match and level the series against New Zealand and pick up an important 10 points in their last match of the ODI Super League.

Sri Lanka Team Direct Qualification Will Depend On South Africa Series Against Netherlands

Sri Lanka Team’s hopes will depend on the proteas series against the Netherlands. South Africa has two matches left of their postponed ODI series against the Netherlands. New Zealand currently sits at the top of the Super League standings with 165 points and also has one match left to play in the series.

Two wins against the Netherlands each game carries 10 points in the upcoming series, the proteas will see them overtake West Indies currently in eighth place with 88 points, and position them well for direct qualification to the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

Hosts India and 7 different groups will straight qualify for the match with two will get their tickets through a qualifier competition in Zimbabwe in June and July. Sri Lanka will most likely play the qualifiers in Zimbabwe with South Africa named a star-studded team against Men in orange.
