Occasions When Indian Team Participated In a Game on August 15th

Ever wondered whether Indian team had ever played on the day of Independence day i.e. August 15?

The answer is yes. There have been four such occasions when Indian team had been involved in a game on the Independence Day. Incidentally, out of the four games, two have come at Galle against Sri Lanka, whereas, other two at The Oval against England.

Looking forward to knowing the results of those games. Here is a list of games when India participated in a contest involving Independence Day –

August (15-18) 1936, The Oval

The very first occasion of India playing a game on the Independence day came in the year 1936, on India’s tour to England. It was a Test match at The Oval where the visitors lost the game by a margin of nine wickets.

The Test started on August 15 only and England posted a huge total of 471 on the board to put India right under pressure. The Maharaja of Vizianagaram led side was bundled out on 222, and England acclaimed a big lead right at the start. The England skipper enforced the follow-on and after the completion of three innings in the game, England needed a mere total of 64 to win the contest.

Without any difficulty, the Sir Gubby Allen led side chased down the target with the loss of just one wicket and defeated India on their first ever contest which started on August 15. Though India was not an independent country at that time.

August (14-19) 1952, The Oval

Just after five years of gaining Independence, India played one more Test against England which involved the Independence day. It started on August 14 and comprised the date August 15 as well. Unlike the last time, the match ended in a draw, courtesy rain. Only 192.5 overs were bowled in the game. Though, there were two complete innings.

England batted first where they scored 326 runs on the board with the loss of six wickets. India too played one complete inning and was bundled out on 98, to trail by a big margin of 238.

August (14-17) 2001, Galle

After a period of almost 50 years, India again played a Test match which involved the Independence day. This time, Sourav Ganguly led India was in Galle and again, the visitors did not have a favourable outing.

In the first innings, India was bundled out on a score of 187 to which Sri Lanka replied with 362. Already trailing by a margin of 150+, team India could just manage 180 runs in the third innings and Sri Lanka cruised to an easy win by scoring those six runs.

Augst (12-16) 2015, Galle

Team India continued its abysmal form on the day involving the Independence day. This time, it was the Virat Kohli-led side which faced Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series. They were in a comfortable situation and needed just 176 runs in the final innings. Though, India continued its poor run on the Independence day and was bundled on just 112, to lose the game. This loss was the biggest disappointment, as Virat Kohli led side was expected to win the game easily but that was not the case.

Later though, team India bounced back and won the series by a margin of 2-1.
