Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain disagrees with the notion that their recent World Cup performance was their “worst ever”. Instead, he reflects on England’s success in white-ball cricket over the past 6-7 years and suggests that it may be time for a new era in the country’s cricket era.

The reigning champions entered the game against Sri Lanka in an almost impossible scenario and dropped to the bottom second place on the points table after only one victory in five games. Many are shocked by England’s performances, given that they were one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Speaking to the media, Nasser Hussain believes that England has made significant improvements in their game over the years, especially in the white-ball format. He thinks that the defending champions have been exceptionally successful before the World Cup.

“I have been watching England in World Cups and playing for England in World Cups. Paul Collingwood has been as well. We were terrible a long long time ago. We have enjoyed the last 6-7 years because they have been quite brilliant.

“Buttler, Morgan, and his men have been outstanding, but have been unravelled here. But it shouldn’t take anything away from them on how they have played in the last 6-7 years. It has been a bridge too far. There will be a new era that will come in,” Nasser Hussain said.

After their incredible triumphs in the ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup in 2019 and 2022, Jos Buttler’s team went into the event with a lot of confidence. Nonetheless, they have suffered embarrassing defeats to Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and New Zealand, except for their victory over Bangladesh.

In The Last 8 Attempts England Have Failed To Make The Semis 7 Times – Virender Sehwag

Former Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag, did not mince his words as he reminded England of their past performances in the World Cup. He pointed out that, except for the 2019 edition, England failed to make it to the semi-finals in seven of the last eight tournaments.

“England in 50 over one-day international cricket has been a very mediocre side. Apart from the 2019 World Cup at Home, in the last 8 attempts they have failed to make the semis 7 times. Not having a steady side and too much chopping & changing and wrongly thinking that they are as exciting in ODI’s as they are in Tests cost them,” Virender Sehwag said.

Defending Champions England will take on the high-flying Indian team on their next encounter in Lucknow on Sunday and a loss against the host nation will officially rule them out of the ODI World Cup 2023.
