With 499 runs in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Australian captain Steven Smith was indeed at his best against India. However, the New South Wales batsman couldn’t save his side from a 2-1 series defeat, as the Indian team was all over his side at Dharamshala. That though, doesn’t take a bit from Australia as they have competed superbly in the series giving India intense competition throughout.
Once the formalities were done and dusted at Dharamshala on the fourth morning, Smith lauded his side for showing character throughout the series. The Australian run machine was full of smiles despite not ending on the winning side as his team defied all expectations by giving India a real tough fight.
“It was a magnificent series, probably one of the best I have been part of so far,” said Smith. “Credit to India, they are a fantastic side. It was a fantastic learning curve for us. The way we adapted to these conditions was fantastic. That middle session where we lost for five for 70 odd made the difference. I thought India bowled particularly well yesterday, especially Umesh Yadav.”
Smith did however mention that his side missed out on a few crucial chances. The dropped catch of Wriddhiman Saha late on the second day by Matt Renshaw in the slips was one such clear instance which cost Australia dearly.
“We have probably let a few moments slip, you can’t do that against a quality outfit like India. We have learnt a lot. It is one of the most picturesque grounds. It was a very good wicket her,” said Smith about missing some crucial chances.
With tempers flaring throughout the series, Smith concluded by apologising for his misconduct and crossing the boundaries on a few occasions.
“I have been pretty intense throughout the series. I probably let my emotions take over at times and I apologise for that,” said Smith.
