Opinion: Why Just Breaking Records won’t lead Virat Kohli into the Elite List of Greatest Batsmen?
One of the biggest debates of all-time in cricket has been of who is the greatest batsman of all time is?
Over the years, cricket has had many batting great, but this debate has followed us forever now. After the retirement of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, one of the front-runners in the race to be the greatest has been India captain Virat Kohli.
Virat has dominated all the leading bowlers in the present era in his nine years of international career. He has been a prolific run-scorer for India in all the formats and thus, has been India’s batting mainstay in the limited-over format.
Kohli already has 45 centuries to his name and is on his way to breaking some, or maybe many records.
Despite all the numbers being in Kohli’s favour, his name will always fall second to Sachin Tendulkar. Also, if he breaks the majority of batting records in cricket (mostly held by Sachin Tendulkar), he still won’t be regarded as the greatest ever to have graced the game.
Breaking records is part and parcel of every sport, but what matters the most, is to face the toughest of conditions and the competition to achieve that feat. In the years gone by, the game of cricket has had some drastic changes and has become more of a batsman oriented game.
So, here are five reasons why the game has changed and why Kohli can never match the standards set by the players before him.
