Otis Gibson has been named as the new South African head coach and he will be leaving his services for the England national team where he is currently serving as the national team’s bowling coach.
His assignment will end with the series against West Indies and he will immediately join the South African team after the end of the series. English coach Trevor Bayliss had confirmed earlier that their bowling coach would be taking up the role of the head coach of the South African team.
South Africa’s previous coach Russell Domingo’s contract ended following the tour of England which the Proteas lost by a 1-3 margin. They played well in patches but failed to seize the opportunities at crucial junctures in the series which eventually led to their defeat. They have a strong team and they would look to flourish under Otis Gibson.
It has also been confirmed that England Cricket Board (ECB) will be looking at options for the bowling coach ahead of the Ashes Down Under later in the year. Meanwhile the Proteas. Gibson served as the head coach of the West Indies national team from 2010-2014 and under him the Windies despite losing many had some memorable moments also.
Gibson had very little international experience under his belt but even during his brief career, he impressed with his bowling. He appeared for the national team in only 2 Tests and 15 ODI’s. It can be said without a doubt that he would have been a permanent member had he played for West Indies in this era but given the fact that the Caribbeans had some extra ordinary fast bowlers at that time, Gibson couldn’t cement his place in the team.
