It’s Very Painful To Lose Against Bangladesh: Dinesh Chandimal

Sri Lanka wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Chandimal is gutted after the loss to Bangladesh in Dambulla by 90 runs in the first One-day International of three-match series, he has expressed the Lions’ can’t use the term of “transition” every time after their poor performances before expressing team members are ‘working hard’ to deliver as a unit.
“We need to put our hands up and come up with results. All players should take responsibility for the opportunities they get. The players are all working hard, and hopefully we’ll be able to see the results soon. You can’t say every time that this is our transition period,” Chandimal was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.com.
The 27-year-old Chandimal stated Bangladesh have a good bunch of players around who are playing regularly for the Tigers and has improved well as a unit with the blend of youth and experience, but he did not look happy after his team struggled in the first game on Saturday when they were bundled out for 234.
“When I first came into the side, we beat them easily,” Chandimal said. But if you take the new Bangladesh, they have seven to eight players who have been playing international cricket, and since that group has been playing together, they have a lot of experience. It’s very painful to lose,” Chandimal said.
Adding much to the woes, it was Lanka’s sixth consecutive loss after they were whitewashed (5-0) against South Africa last month.
Interestingly, Bangladesh team is coached by Chandimal’s former coach Chandika Hathurusingha.
On the other hand, the long-standing poor fielding continued to whip the hosts as they allowed Bangladesh to post their highest ODI total against Lanka.
“If we had restricted them for 280 we could have done something with the bat, but we were sloppy in the field. We do lot of fielding training, but there’s pressure when we come into the game,” Chandimal expressed.
However, it was evident in the past Lankan’s used to beat Bangladesh by a decent margin, but Mashrafe Bin Mortaza led-slide has pulled up their socks to perform well in Lankan shores after winning the second Test in Galle to level the series 1-1 and further claim a win in their hundredth overall Test.
In last ten 10 overs, Lankan bowlers conceded 109 runs before Chandimal emerged as the top scorer for Sri Lanka. He scored 59 off 70 balls.
The Balapitiya-born Chandimal has been part of the Sri Lankan contingent since past seven years.
Chandimal said it was team’s decision to bat second.
“It was a team decision to bat second. We saw that there was dew there over last two days and we wanted to make most of it,” Chandimal concluded.
The right-handed batsman has played 123 ODIs, 48 T20Is and 36 Tests so far for Sri Lanka. He has amassed 6,414 runs across all three formats since making his debut in 2010.
