PAK vs SL 2017: Chamara Kapugedera Doubtful For Fourth ODI After Suffering Freak Injury

Trailing 3-0 in the five-match series against Pakistan and the danger of another humiliating whitewash looming large, Sri Lanka suffers yet another blow as their middle-order batsman Chamara Kapugedera is doubtful for the penultimate game of the series after suffering an unfortunate injury during the third ODI.

The incident occurred in the tenth over of Pakistan’s innings when Kapugedera took a blow on his face after not noticing the throw from wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella. The ball hit him under his right eye before he was taken to the hospital and did not return to the field for the remainder of the game.

Sri Lanka’s Manager Asanka Gurusinha confirmed that the player has not suffered any fracture and is currently under observation.

“Chamara is under observation. There is no fracture thankfully, but there is a massive swelling on his face,” Gurusinha was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz on Thursday (October 19).

The 30-year old, who has experienced a string of poor performances with the bat in recent times, is unlikely to play in the fourth ODI on Friday (October 20) but is expected to be fit for the fifth and final ODI on Monday (October 23).

Uncapped top order batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama is likely to replace Kapugedera in the playing eleven for the forthcoming ODI. Samarawickrama joined the squad on Wednesday (October 18)  to bolster the batting lineup. The 22-year old has been one of the most impressive performers in Sri Lanka’s domestic cricket. He was named the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 2014 and was also the highest run-getter in domestic cricket last season.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will be desperately hoping to get back to winning ways. The Islanders have endured a terrible time in ODIs this year. They began the year with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of South Africa and failed to win the series at home against Bangladesh. They exited the Champions Trophy at the group stage, and it was followed by a shocking series loss at home against Zimbabwe. They suffered yet another whitewash at India at home and are not in danger of ending another series without winning a game.
