ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020: Pakistan Announces 15-Member Squad
On Friday (6th December), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the 15-member U19 squad for the upcoming ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020. The 16-year-old right-arm fast-bowler Naseem Shah, who recently made his international debut, has been selected in this squad.
South Africa will host the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020 from 17th January to 9th February 2020. While it will be the 13th edition of U19 CWC, South Africa will host for the second time as they hosted it for the first time in 1998.
The two-time U19 CWC champions Pakistan have been seeded in the Group C of the ICC U19 CWC 2020 along with Bangladesh, Scotland and Zimbabwe. Pakistan U19 team will begin their journey in this tournament on day three (19th January) against Scotland. Then, Pakistan U19 will face Zimbabwe and Bangladesh on 22nd and 24th January respectively. At the end of the Group Stage, the top two teams of each group will qualify for the Super League quarter-finals while the last two teams will move to the Plate quarter-finals.
In this 15-member Pakistan U19 squad, the pacer Naseem Shah is a special name. On 21st November 2019, during the Brisbane Test, Naseem Shah made Test debut for Pakistan. While the hosts Australia won that match by an innings and five runs, he only dismissed the opener David Warner (154).
Pakistan is the only side to win two consecutive U19 CWC trophies
In the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup history, Pakistan is the only side who have won two consecutive trophies. They won these tournaments in 2004 and 2006 in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively. In 2004 final, they beat West Indies by 25 runs. Two years later, they beat India by 38 runs in the low-scoring final of 2006 edition as Pakistan U19 defended their first innings total of 109 runs. In 1988, 2010 and 2014 editions, they finished as the runners-up. They finished in the third position in the last edition of this tournament in 2018 in New Zealand.
In 2018 and 2019 ACC U19 Asia Cups, Pakistan failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
