In what comes as a surprising update, The Asian Cricket Council has decided to host the next edition of Asia Cup in Pakistan. The tournament will be played in a T20 format ahead of T20 World Cup, which will serve as a preparation to the teams for the tournament. While switching the format was the best thing about it, giving hosting rights to Pakistan will surely draw criticism.

It is sure that the Indian team will not be travelling to Pakistan for the tournament and in all possibilities, the tournament will be shifted out of the country. It is to be noted that India was to host the previous Asia Cup that played last year.

Objection from Pakistan was one of the reasons behind the tournament being shifted out of the country and in no case, the Indian team will be travelling to Pakistan. BCCI was still the host board last year.

The home team also won the tournament, defeating Bangladesh on the final delivery of the final. The tournament was played in the 50-over format. In 2016, Asia Cup was played ahead of T20 World Cup and for the first time, the tournament was played in the T20 format.

Since there is a T20 World Cup next year, the Asia Cup will be back to the T20 format. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan will be the key teams to watch for. There might also be a qualifier tournament just like last year. Hong Kong had defeated UAE in the final of the qualifier to make it to the tournament.

The dates for Asia Cup 2020 are yet to be announced but it is expected to be played just before the T20 World Cup. The tournament will also see India and Pakistan play against each other outside an ICC tournament.

The two teams do not play bilateral series and only play in ICC tournaments and Asia Cup. After a break of eight months, the two teams are set to face each other next month in the World Cup.

They are slated to face each other on June 16 in Manchester. It was last in 2017 that the two teams had faced each other in an ICC tournament. Both the teams won a game each.
