Want to be a professional cricketer?
Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel has raised questions over team India’s handling of its wicketkeepers in the recent years. KL Rahul-Rishabh Pant has become the talk of the town in recent times. Since MS Dhoni’s departure from the Indian team, the team has failed to find an effective replacement. Pant had been given numerous chances but he failed miserably. But, his concussion in the first ODI against Australia made way for Rahul and the Karnataka wicketkeeper-batsman has become a regular starter since then.
In the Test series against New Zealand, Rishabh Pant was prioritized over regular and veteran Indian Test wicketkeeper, Wriddhiman Saha. This came as much of a shocker not only to the Indian cricket fans, but to some experts as well. Virat Kohli was heavily criticized for his faulty team selection policies that led to a devastating 2-0 loss by the hands of the Kiwis at their home.
Now, Parthiv Patel has also raised questions over team India’s selection of its wicketkeepers and their desire to fluctuate them on a regular basis.
Parthiv Patel Raises Questions Over Team India’s Selection Policy Towards Wicketkeepers
While speaking on Aakash Chopra’s YouTube channel, Parthiv said that one can’t expect wicketkeepers to perform in every match, and stated that the selection panel should be more patient.
“Personally, I think that with wicket-keepers, we are very impatient. We can’t expect (them to perform) in every match and every series. I played two Tests in South Africa, then Dinesh Karthik played two Tests in England, then in Australia, both Karthik and Saha weren’t there, so Rishabh Pant played,” said Parthiv Patel.
“According to me, we are trying to fix something that is not broken. Now that we have Saha, we don’t have a reason to do anything else. I feel that against England when they asked me to open, I opened. In the 5th Test, my third of the series, Vijay injured his shoulder and I opened after keeping for 170 overs,” Parthiv Patel added.
KL Rahul Has Done Considerably Well In India’s Recent Outings
KL Rahul has been an impressive performer for India lately in the limited-overs format and has been an excellent wicketkeeper-batsman for the Men in Blue. His performance in the T20I series against New Zealand earned him the Man of the Series. He is slowly cementing his place in the Indian team as a regular wicketkeeper-batsman.
Now, with the T20 World Cup approaching real soon, there are speculations of MS Dhoni returning to the Indian team, selecting a wicketkeeper will be a hard nut to crack for the Indian team management as team India already has a lot of pressure of winning an ICC trophy.
