Pattinson Reveals about the ‘Risky’ Operation he Underwent in New Zealand
The Australian fast bowler, who has been ruled out of the 2017-18 season with a stress fracture for the fifth time in a row this winter recently talked at length about the operations he underwent in New Zealand which he hopes, will prolong his Test career. The operation he went for was the same as Kiwi fast bowler Shane Bond underwent during his playing days to reinforce the problem area.
“The reason we went over there was that they use a good technique where they don’t actually touch the fracture with any pins or anything like that. They put the pins there as an anchor and anchor a wire around that area to basically clamp it shut so there’s no movement in there and stops the stress going in that area. The surgery wasn’t as big and bad as it was made out to be,” Pattinson was heard saying to SEN’s The Run Home.
The 27-year-old Pattinson admitted there is no confirmation on the date when he will come back to cricket and admitted that it depends on the player to player.
“There’s been different time frames on different players. I had a good chat with Shane Bond before when he did it and he said he was back playing within four months, which was quite quick. But I’ve put a line through my name for the rest of the summer with the injury and there’s really not much cricket next winter, so there’s a good chance to try and give it every chance to heal. They did a bone graft as well from my hip so I’ve got a new bone from my hip in that actual fracture, so they’re trying to strengthen that area up as well to give it a bit more reinforcement so it will stop fracturing,” he further stated.
Pattinson burst into the international circuit as the 21-year-old cricketer against New Zealand in Brisbane and took fifer in the second innings and was adjudged the man of the match. He has then only played 16 Test in the next six years, as each comeback was cut short due to injury and has picked up 70 wickets with an average of 26.
“But being 27 and having a pretty good Test record and doing quite well, that’s the big thing that’s kept me pushing on and trying to get back,” Pattinson signed off.
