Performances in Test & ODIs Show a Cricketer’s Worth, Says Mashrafe Bin Mortaza

The Story

Bangladesh’s ODI skipper Mashrafe Mortaza has expressed that the real worth of cricketer cannot be judged on the basis of performances in the shortest format of the game – T20 cricket. In the last decade, the T20 format has gained massive traction and has increased in popularity among fans and cricketers.

The emergence of this format is slowly changing the landscape of the cricketing world. Franchise based model has played its own role in effecting the change. Their rising relevance has challenged the status quo of the other two formats of the game – ODIs and Test cricket.

Mashrafe Mortaza Backs Longer Formats

Mashrafe Mortaza, by far the most influential skipper Bangladesh ever had in their short cricketing history, remarked that while money has been a factor that lures some cricketers into prioritising T20 cricket, it can never leap ahead of the ODI and Test format in terms of reputation.

He remarked,

“T20s might bring money and glamour but it has never been a standard to measure any cricketer. The true battle field is Test and then ODI cricket. Look at Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, they poured their talent in Test cricket, said Mortaza on Saturday night, after receiving the ‘Shera Bangali’ award.

Mashrafe Mortaza retired from the T20 cricket on 6th April 2017 after the culmination of T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Despite making his debut in 2006 against Zimbabwe, the seamer played only 54 T20 international matches, all thanks to various injuries. He finished with 42 wickets and scored 377 runs. As a skipper, he led Bangladesh in 28 shortest version matches and won 10 of them.

His franchise cricket career has seen him play for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. Later, in 2012, he was picked by Dhaka Gladiators in the Bangladesh Premier League and later joined Comilla Victorians 2015, leading the side to the title win in the third 3rd Bangladesh Premier League edition.
