Phil Simmons Joins The List Of Aspirants For India Head Coach

Former West Indies opener Phil Simmons has joined the list of aspirants for the job of Head Coach of Indian cricket team. The former coach of Windies, Ireland and Zimbabwe is one of the strongest applicants who have joined the race, though his non-link with any of the Indian team member might see him not finishing the race.

Simmons has a great record as a coach as apart from coaching Windies to a T20 World Cup victory in 2016 played in India, he had developed Ireland as a strong nation as well which saw the Irish team staging an upset in World Cup 2011 and 2015. Along with that, Ireland also won 11 trophies under him. He coached Zimbabwe for a record 224 matches, which stands a record till now. He was recently appointed as a consultant for Afghanistan cricket team. (Read Here: Phil Simmons Appointed As Afghanistan’s Consultant)

Simmons joins the short list of aspirants for the job which has likes of Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Dodda Ganesh, Lal Chand Rajput, Tom Moody and Richard Pybus. Out of these, Sehwag and Shastri look the favourite to take up the job due to the rapport they share with the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Though BCCI has clearly said that Kohli will have no role in selecting the coach but there can’t be a case when BCCI will not take his consent after looking at the way Anil Kumble made an exit from the job, citing untenable relation with the Indian skipper. Surely, Kohli will have a say in selecting the coach and as mentioned, there might a direct race between Sehwag and Shastri for the job.

The last to apply for the Head Coach job is July 9 and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) which has been assigned the task to select the new Head Coach will conduct the interview on July 10. The India tour of Sri Lanka later this month will be the first stint for the new incoming coach with the Indian cricket team. (Read Here: Rahul Dravid To Continue As Coach Of India A, U-19)

Though Simmons applying for the job is a bit surprising due to his lack of connection here, but one look at his credentials as a coach, and he emerges the winner in the end if CAC decides to appoint a coach on the basis of his track record.
