When a fan named Shalin Khatri on quora, a famous question answer site, was asked to share his experience of meeting with a cricketer, he came up with great anecdote.
His father, who was serving as Deputy Police Commissioner in Vadodara city in Gujarat, was given the charge of the stadium security when England played a practice match against Indian Board President’s XI during their tour of 2008. The fan recalls that he persuaded his father to take him to the match and his father duly obliged.
Now coming to the funny part of the story- the fan, who by his admission was getting bored watching the match, was sitting in the box. Soon, England’s star batsman Kevin Pietersen, who was leading England during that tour, arrived in the box after scoring 47 off 57 balls. His innings was cut short due to cramps in the lower back. After arriving in the box, the right-handed batsman sat beside the fan’s father in the front row and started drinking Redbull, an energy drink. The fan said that his father did not know about the drink and so had a glance at it. When Pietersen saw the fan’s father watching the drink the following conversation took place:
Pietersen: Aha, You want some?
Father: No, Thanks.
Pietersen: Okay, But even if you want it, I won’t give it to you!
Following the conversation, the English star burst into laughter. The gesture from the English batsman infuriated the fan’s father, who according to his son was a very short-tempered man, and he retaliated in a very funny manner. He called a constable and ordered in Gujarati to the constable: “Aa baju walo je drink pi rahyo che ne e drink game tya thi shodhi ne ahiya ubhela badha police wala ne pivdavo.” (“Whatever this man beside me is drinking, find it and buy it for every police person who is standing here.”)
The constable duly obliged and after a while a carton of Redbulls arrived. Soon after every policeman in the box was sitting with a can of Redbull in his hand. The gesture would have obviously made Pietersen angry.
The fan said: “KP’s face expressions were priceless.”
The fan’s father did not stop there and went on to give Pietersen a taste of his medicine.
He opened his Redbull and asked KP:
“You want some? But I won’t give it to you!”
The fan said: “I still remember the face of KP at that moment. It was hilarious.”
Coming to that practice match, the Indian Board President’s XI defeated thrashed the visitors by 8 wickets. Batting first England were dismissed for only 238 runs. Pietersen was England’s top scorer with 47. The hosts replied strongly and scored 342 for the loss of 8 wickets with the help of a brilliant century from Gautam Gambhir (108). Munaf Patel who took 5 wickets in the first innings, once again wreaked havoc on England in the second innings and took 5 for 32 runs to dismiss the visitors for only 158. Set a target of just 55 runs, the hosts chased down the total quite comfortably.
