Police will question BCCI officials over GCA fraud case 1

Police will question senior BCCI officials in connection with the alleged fraud case involving Goa Cricket Association (GCA).

The GCA  officials have misused the money given by the BCCI for the cricket development.

“We are investigating the procedure of how the funds are released to cricketing bodies like GCA. We also want to know what were the rules of releasing fund during the time when the alleged fraud happened,” a senior official attached to the Economic Offences Cell (EOC) of Goa Police told PTI on Sunday.

“To know the details and to gather evidence we will have to record the statement of BCCI senior officials,” the official said, adding that “names of persons who could be questioned are being finalized.”

“Either our police team will go to their respective BCCI offices and record their statements or they will be summoned.

No possibility is ruled out,” the official said.

Goa Police in the last month has arrested GCA President Chetan Desai, Secretary Vinod Phadke and Treasurer Akbar Mulla on a complaint that they had allegedly embezzled  the money dedicated for cricket development in the state.

The three officials, who were later granted bail, are accused of money laundering of Rs 3.13 crore between 2006 and 2008.

The Enforcement Directorate office recently visited the BCCI’s headquarter in Mumbai where they received the details about the cheque which was released to GCA.

BCCI has been recently plagued with many controversies as their state unit like DDAC, Assam Cricket Association have not paid the annual fees to BCCI.

On the other hand, Indian cricket governing body recently faced a difficult time as the apex court-monitored Lodha committee recommended changes in the governance system of BCCI and its units.

The Lodha committee asked the BCCI to bring in the financial transparency  in the game.

Supreme Court recently upheld the Lodha Committee recommendations so now the all BCCI units have to implement the recommendations to bring transparency in the governance system of cricket in India.
