Possible That None Of Either Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik Are Selected For WC: Sourav Ganguly
Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has given a surprising assessment on India problems to find a good backup wicketkeeper for the upcoming World Cup.
The selectors sprung a huge surprise by dropping Dinesh Karthik for the recently-concluded series against Australia. It was a decision that has taken quite a few by surprise and the reasons are quite obvious. With MS Dhoni not being at his old best and no other reliable finisher, the team pinned its hopes on Karthik. And the right-handed batsman also did reasonably well in the last one year or so.
Since the 2017 Champions Trophy, Karthik scored 425 runs in 20 matches at an average of over 47. 22. He also impressed with his finishing abilities during the tour of Australia and New Zealand.
He played a key role in two wins by scoring two unbeaten innings of 25 and 38 in Australia and New Zealand respectively. He had also scored an impressive unbeaten 33 in the last T20I against New Zealand although India lost the game.
In Karthik’s place, India tried out Rishabh Pant against Australia. However, Pant failed to impress with both bat and ball. He scored 52 runs with the bat in the two games he played but it was his wicketkeeping that made many criticise him. Pant missed several easy chances in the fourth ODI to show that he is still not ready to take the responsibility. Pant’s failure has more or less brought Karthik in contention.
And now while the team-management is pondering as to whom to take to England for the World Cup, Sourav Ganguly feels there is a chance both Pant and Karthik might miss out on the World Cup squad. While Ganguly said he would prefer Pant over Karthik, he suggested that one among Karthik, Pant and KL Rahul will make it to the World Cup if India also select allrounder Vijay Shankar.
“I would back Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik. The latter has played a lot of cameos but we haven’t seen him play a big innings while pulling the team out of trouble like Kedar Jadhav does for India. So, if I have to choose one amongst the two, I would go for Pant as he is a player of the future.
“But it is quite possible that none of either Pant or Karthik are selected for the World Cup. The way they have backed Vijay Shankar recently, it is possible that none of the two frontline backup wicket-keepers will make it to England. So in the event that Shankar is chosen, only one amongst KL Rahul, Pant and Karthik will be selected,” Sourav Ganguly said.
