Know the Top-5 Young Talents auctioned at high prices in the IPL auction

Indian Premier League [IPL] auctions saw the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Karthik, the players not picked for the World Cup National squad, go at unexpected high price of 16 and 10.5 Crores Indian Rupees respectively. While such an investment in a single player is baffling, it is said to be a strategy followed by some franchisees to deplete the funds of a targeted franchisee soon in the auction.

More interesting in the IPL actions was to see the Franchisees picking up some young local uncapped players. Most of them are priced around 10 Lakh Rupees. IPL 8 auctions on Sunday the 16th February, saw an unusual price for three such low profile names at surprise talents from breadth and width of the country.

Shreyas Iyer of Mumbai was bought by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 2.6 crores, KC Cariappa of Karnataka was bought for Rs 2.4 crores by Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan was bought for Rs 50 Lakhs by Royal Challengers Benagalore. It is interesting to note that the first two boys fetched 26 and 24 times of their base value of 10 lakhs respectively.

Let us look at the Top-5 young talents auctioned at high prices in the IPL Auction –

Sarfraz Khan:

Born on 17th October 1997, in Mumbai, Sarfraz is a Right hand bat and Right arm off-break bowler. He had hit the news headlines when at the age of 12 years he had scored 439 runs in 2009, a world record in Mumbai’s Harris Shield school cricket tournament.

Sarfarz’s achievement so far has been playing for India Under-19 and Mumbai Under-19. His list A debut was on 2 March 2014 in Rajkot against Saurashtra, first class debut was against Bengal just 3 months ago from 28-31 December 2014 and he has played 5 innings in 3 matches so far.

He debuted in T20 for Under-19 Mumbai team on 2nd April, 2014. As a batsman his average is 23.75 in I class, 29 in List A and 46 in T20. His bowling is limited to just one over in list A match. Coming from a poor family of vegetable vendor, pray that the money is more usefully spent and the boy is not carried away.

Shreyas Iyer:

Shreyas Santosh Iyer, born on 6th December, 1994 in Mumbai is a right-hand batsman and right-arm leg spinner. He debuted in a List-A match against Saurashtra at Ahmedabad on 8 November 2014 and a month later in a first class (Ranji Trophy) match for Mumbai on 7-10, December 2014.

He played his first T20 match for Mumbai on 30 March 2014. He has an average of 54+ runs in 14 List A and first class matches so far. Appreciation is for his 3 centuries and 6 half centuries already.

K C Cariappa:

A 20 year old boy from Kodagu district of Karnataka, has famously become the mystery of IPL. The mystery leg spinner came to limelight in Karnataka Premier League in 2014. Cariappa is tall for a spinner and bowls with an orthodox round-arm action. The leg break is his stock ball, and he has variations like the Googly and the faster one.

His other strengths that could make it difficult for batsmen to read him, is his ability to bowl off-spinners without changing the grip. Kolkata Knight Riders showed an interest in this spinner with unusual actions, as they will not have the services of Sunil Narine in IPL 8 due to objectionable action.

David Wiese:

David Wiese is another young talent to watch out for in the IPL 2015. He was purchased by Royal Bangalore Challengers for 2.8 Crores in the 2015 auction. He is an excellent hard hitter from South Africa. He has played 8 T-20 matches for South Africa with a strike rate of 127.58. With Gayle, De Villiers and Virat Kohli in the team, this young talent from South Africa might be the right player for Bangalore.

He played for South Africa in the recently concluded series against West Indies. He made his T-20 debut against Sri Lanka in 2013. He plays for Titans in the domestic tournament in South Africa T-20 League.

Chris Morris:

Chris Morris is purchased by Rajasthan Royals for 1.4 Crores in the 2015 auction. He had earlier played for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He has played 5 One day Internationals and 2 T-20 matches for South Africa. He is a fast bowler with good pace and bounce. He plays for the Lions in the domestic T-20 league. His performance has been good with ball, bowling good yorkers at the end of the innings.

I only wish that these youngsters use the opportunity to knock the door of the National team selection sooner than later and don’t get swayed away by the money they would start earning at a young age.
