The franchise from Delhi is one of the underdogs in the India Premier League. Also, Delhi Daredevils is one of the few teams who are yet to taste success in this cash-rich league.
Meanwhile, Delhi did a good at the auctions as the build a balanced squad for the brand new edition of IPL. They have brought back Gautam Gambhir in the squad and will hand him in the leadership role.
Gambhir, who has won two titles as Kolkata Knight Riders skipper, will like to replicate his form at Delhi.
Like last year, Delhi has a lot of youngsters who will be eager to make a mark in this league. With Ricky Ponting by their side, Delhi is one of the dark horse in the upcoming IPL.
Meanwhile, Delhi will start their campaign against Kings XI Punjab on April 8.
Here is the possible first XI for Delhi in the upcoming IPL:
Munro was the best buy for Delhi at the auctions. The southpaw has done immensely well for the Kiwi side in the T20 format.
Munro has a staggering record of three T20I hundreds to his name. Meanwhile, he will be crucial for Delhi at the top-order.
Gautam Gambhir (C):
Gambhir, who returns to his former franchise is likely to open alongside New Zealand’s Colin Munro.
The southpaw will look to replicate his form from Kolkata Knight Riders and lead Delhi to a successful campaign.
The right-handed batsman has been consistent for Delhi in the past three years. He has provided solidity in the top-order changing his gears when required.
Also, Iyer has done pretty well at international level in whatever limited opportunities he has got.
A destructive left-handed batsman has been in the limelight in recent times for his antics in limited overs cricket. Pant is also looked as MS Dhoni’s successor in the shorter formats for India.
Pant had a good run in 2017 but failed to impress at the international level. He will be eager to use this platform and make a strong case for himself.
Maxwell is one of the destructive batsmen in the world in this format. Also, he has made his presence felt in the previous editions.
Further, Maxwell brings agility in the squad as he is capable of batting anywhere depending on the situations. Gambhir will also like to use his gentle off-spins whenever required.
Naman Ojha (WK):
The wicket-keeper batsman will bring a lot of power in the middle-order. Ojha, who can clear any boundaries will be a serious threat to the bowlers.
With 112 IPL matches behind his back, Delhi will certainly want to use his experience.
The all-rounder from Tamil Nadu recently made his debut for India in Nidahas Trophy. Also, Shankar is one of the smart buys for Delhi at the auctions.
Although he didn’t get enough opportunities to prove his batting skills, he bowled some tight line and length.
With a lot of domestic experience, Vijay will be Gambhir’s go-to man in the middle overs.
The tall and lanky all-rounder from South Africa was one of the three cricketers retained by Delhi. Meanwhile, Morris had an outstanding stint in the previous IPL.
He scored 154 runs with strike rate of 163 and took 12 wickets at an economy rate of less than 8.
However, with a lot of experience behind his back Morris is one of the crucial members of the team.
Although Yadav has very little experience in the league, he has done pretty well in the domestic circuit.
Along with gentle off-spin, Jayant will provide depth in the batting order. The right-hander can smack the ball very well.
Rabada, who is in his prime form is an obvious choice in the first XI. He has done tremendously well in the past one year in all forms of cricket.
With his extra pace, the pacer will look to hurry up the batsmen and take wickets at the top.
The veteran leg-spinner brings tons of experience with him to the team. Also, he is the second highest wicket-taker in this coveted league.
Mishra, who is known to be a match-winner will aim to do well for the Delhi franchise.
