Preview 5th ODI: Ruthless India Eye Whitewash against Sri Lanka
It would be fair to say that Indian team lead by Virat Kohli hasn’t defeated Sri Lanka in the ongoing ODI series but has decimated them. Sri Lankans were not at all competitive in even a single match of the series and they didn’t deserve to win at all. Had there been some fight, people would have taken this defeat, but Sri Lankans were very much far away from fight. Former Sri Lankan cricketer Russell Arnold said before the start of the series that this is Sri Lanka’s best chance to win the series in India, but unfortunately, this ‘chance’ turned out to be the worst nightmare for Sri Lankan Cricket. They are already 4-0 down in the series and on Sunday, it would all get down to the fact whether they would be able to prevent the whitewash or not.
Indians are riding high on confidence after four consecutive wins. The top-order lead by Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan played their part to perfection in the first three ODIs. In the fourth ODI, Rohit Sharma replaced Shikhar Dhawan, who was rested, and made history by becoming the first man in the history of ODI cricket to score two double centuries and register the highest individual score(264) in ODIs. Unbelievable that was! Virat Kohli and Ambati Rayudu have played some steady cricket at 3 and 4 respectively. The major thing that has made India the favourites to lift the World Cup 2015 has been the rise of Axar Patel and Umesh Yadav in this series. Axar Patel has picked up 9 wickets in 4 matches and Umesh Yadav 10 in same matches. Their performances have somewhat India’s bowling worries and have added more stability to their line-up.
Suresh Raina has been rested from Sunday’s ODI and it looks most likely that Kedhar Jadhav would make his debut tomorrow.
On the other hand, a lot has been said about the Sri Lankan team earlier. They have outclassed, outplayed, decimated by the mighty Indians. They would be hurting a lot but we all know that Sri Lanka are capable of hitting it back and that too very hard when it matters the most. Their stalwarts Mahela Jayawardne, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews would be itching to go out and give all they have on Sunday and atleast go back with a psychological victory. Sri Lanka should try their level best to win and it’s just the case of clicking as a team. If they can do it, they’ll surely win.
Probable Playing XI For India:
Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Virat Kohli, Robin Uthappa, Kedhar Jadhav, Axar Patel, Karn Sharma, R Ashwin, Syuart Binny, Dhawal Kulkarni
Probable Playing XI For Sri Lanka:
Niroshan Dickwella, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dinesh Chandimal, Mahela Jayawardne, Angelo Mathews, Ashan Priyanjan, Thisara Perera, Seekkuge Prasanna, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ajanta Mendis, Shaminda Eranga
The Sri Lankan lions would come out hard at the Indians to secure a victory but most likely India will guarantee a whitewash completing the drubbing with 5-0 series win.
