India’s star batsman Prithvi Shaw might make his comeback to competitive cricket as soon as his ban ends. Shaw is currently serving an eight-month ban period which ends on November 15. He isn’t a part of the Mumbai’s squad for the first three matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and will miss few more games but his name will be up for discussion if Mumbai reach the next stage of the tournament.

Milind Rege, Mumbai’s chairman of selectors, has said that Shaw will be considered for selection when his ban ends. “He will be free to play from [November] 16, so of course he will be considered for selection. I can’t make any commitment to whether he will be back, but we will certainly discuss his selection,” he told ESPNcricinfo.

Shaw was banned for eight months in the month of July for a doping violation. The board was satisfied with his explanation that he consumed the substance inadvertently. He is allowed to make a comeback from November 16. The ban has seen Shaw miss Vijay Hazare Trophy, India A tournaments and other international fixtures that India have played.

Shaw, who had made his Test debut against West Indies last year, will have a big challenge to earn his India spot back. In his absence, Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal have done brilliantly in the home conditions.

As for now, Shubman Gill is the reserve opener in the squad but a good show in Ranji Trophy can see the youngster make a comeback for New Zealand tour. Shaw will be available for full Ranji Trophy season.

He will also have his eyes on next year’s T20 World Cup. In 33 T20s so far, Shaw has scored 732 runs at 22.18 with a strike-rate of 143.24. He is a part of Delhi Capitals in IPL. In May this year, he had led North Mumbai Panthers to title victory in Mumbai T20 league.
