Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who is known to be very much clear with his opinions, has identified England’s biggest problem in the series. Ganguly’s words are very precise which make the audiences relate to his points. England ended Day 1 of the Chennai Test on a pretty good note, registering 284 at a loss of four wickets. The biggest contribution came from all-rounder Moeen Ali, who ended the day at 120 but got out on 146 early on Day 2.
Sourav Ganguly praised the effort of the left-hander who saw the Englishmen out of trouble as they lost their openers quickly. He rightly pointed out England has been successful in posting high totals but their real problem has been with their bowling. They’ve struggled to pick up 20 wickets which has been a massive drawback. The Atletico De Kolkata owner believes even 500 runs on the board is worthless if they cannot pick up 20 wickets.
Ganguly quoted “They’ve (England) put up scores, last Test in Mumbai they put up 400. Now how many teams in world cricket would lose a Test match after scoring 400 specially on a pitch which has spun so much. So England will put up a good score in this first innings, they could get to 500 because there’s a lot of batting still to come but their problem is who is going to get the Indians out?”
According to Ganguly India need to improve their fielding and find specialist fielders in the team so that the half chances are taken successfully.
“So catching is key, once again I keep saying this and I’ll tell that to Anil (Kumble) when I meet him in Kolkata for the one-dayers that he’s got to find a specialist. If anybody dropped catches when he (Kumble) was bowling he would have been fuming. I don’t know what he’s doing in the dressing room, but he’s got to find specialist fielders who will stand day in day out in those key positions because that’s the only way they can become good fielders”
Ganguly also praised England’s most consistent batsman of the series Joe Root, calling him a class player. However, he argued it is England’s bowling which needs to be taken care of.
