PSL Spot-Fixing: ‘Provisionally’ Suspended Khalid Latif Boycotts ACT Hearing

Pakistani provisionally suspended player Khalid Latif has boycotted the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Tribunal hearing alongside his legal representative Badar Alam after both were refused to hand over the interview copy of the right-handed batsman of May 19 in Lahore which was recorded during the hearing.

“We will continue to boycott the tribunal until we receive recordings of the May 19 proceedings,” Khalid’s lawyer Alam was quoted by Dawn.com.

The reports suggested Alam submitted a request on behalf of his client to ask for the recorded statement in which Latif and his lawyer has alleged that the national board’s lawyer Taffazul Rizvi has passed unhealthily comments against the 31-year-old batsman, who has been the part of Pakistan Super League franchise Islamabad United in both the editions so far.

“We have also made it clear that we are neither accepting the anti-corruption codes nor the tribunal,” Alam maintained.

It becomes pertinent that Karachi-born batsman has been accused of luring the players into such menace after attempting to accept an offer from a bookie which he has further confessed after failing to inform the approaches from bookmaker to PCB during the statement on February 19, according to ACT proceedings.

Latif was heard by a three-member committee which is led by PCB in a bid to give a sit in judgement regarding a spot-fixing scandal which surfaced in February, in the United Arab Emirates soon after the inaugural match was played between defending champions Peshawar Zalmi and former champions of PSL Islamabad United.

Alam has also asked PCB to appoint new Tribunal head for Anti-Corruption hearing as he had doubt against Justice Asghar Haider Rizvi (retired) while stating the committee has proceeded in the absence of Latif.

“I would announce my next course of action at the end of the proceedings,” Alam remarked.

As a mark of protest, Latif and Alam decided not to attend the hearing of Anti-Corruption which is being supervised by the national board as Alam stated the Tribunal wants to keep the statements and all records in their possession.

On the other side, board’s lawyer Rizvi revealed Alam and his client are trying to escape from the case while adding the members would continue the proceeding even in the absence of Latif, who is facing the fixing charges.

Alam counsel for Latif stated they are not trying to get away from the case, but demanding for genuine rights to be taken care of.

“It had been proved that Khalid met a bookie on Feb 8 and then he met him along with Sharjeel Khan, another accused of the spot-fixing case,” Taffazul revealed.

Rizvi revealed Latif’s petition was quashed by Lahore High Court when he took a step against the tribunal body.

“If a player or participant is not appearing before tribunal, from the start or from the middle, then the tribunal has complete right to listen the remaining case as per the law and give the decision,” Taffazul concluded.

The spot-fixing scandal case is heard by its chairman for the Anti-corruption Tribunal Justice Asghar Haider Rizvi followed by former PCB chairman Tauqir Zia (2000-04) and former Pakistani wicket-keeper batsman Wasim Bari.

On Friday, the bat grips were seized by PCB which has been the indication in a bid to take part in the fixing, according to the board itself.
