R Sridhar Urges Youngsters To Learn From Virat Kohli’s Brilliance In the Field

In the first ODI match against New Zealand, India had to face defeat by four wickets. The reason for lose is to blame the weak bowling attack as well as silly fielding mistakes. Well, India’s fielding coach R Sridhar also believes that the Men in Blue were not the best in last Hamilton ODI.

Asked to bat first, India set the mammoth target of 348 runs for New Zealand. However, the target also looked difficult to defend in front of the hosts. The Indian spinners could not create pressure on Kiwi batters. Moreover, Kuldeep Yadav missed the catch of the set batsman Ross Taylor who went on to remain unbeaten in the game with a century, leading Kiwis to win the game. There was also an overthrow by Manish Pandey, who was not in the playing XI but came as a replacement.

We were average in the field: R Sridhar

While addressing media before the second ODI of this series, fielding coach R Sridhar said that the team was average in the field, but they need to work on some areas to return with their old standards.

“…the West Indies series at home was somewhere we really dropped. We were average, to say the least. But definitely we have not lived to the standards as we did in the world cup or even in the build-up to the World Cup in the last couple years,” said Sridhar on the eve of the second ODI here.

“We keep reminding the players about attention to basic detail…In a T20 game, each fielder has to be his own captain. He need not wait for the captain to move him or the bowler to move him in a certain direction or to a certain position,” he said.

Fielding coach appreciates Virat’s effort:

There was also a wow moment in the field when the captain Virat Kohli, with his brilliance, ran out the New Zealand opener Henry Nicholls. Mentioning Virat’s outstanding effort in the field, coach R Sridhar urged the young players to learn from their captain.

“The kind of intensity he brings on to the field, I always say to the younger boys who come, he is a ready-made template for you to copy. Watch him, see what he does,” Sridhar said.

Meanwhile, after losing the first game, India will head to play do or die match in Auckland on 8th February.
