Ajinkya Rahane’s discipline and hunger for more success has impressed one and all. After playing some stellar knocks in test cricket for India, the focus was on Rahane in the shorter formats. However, the Mumbai batsman did not have a productive outing in the ODI’s against Bangladesh. As a matter of fact, he was dumped post the first ODI itself. Skipper MS Dhoni too was a bit critical of Rahane as he said that Rahane struggled to rotate the strike in subcontinent.
The BCCI though, thought otherwise, and named Rahane as the skipper of the Indian side for the Zimbabwe tour. This will boost Rahane’s confidence and self esteem to a great extent. Recently, Indian batting legend Dilip Vengsarkar heaped praises on Rahane and said that the batsman has come of age. Vengsarkar’s views are highly respected as he appreciates an individual only after carefully watching him.
Vengsarkar, who played 116 tests for India said, “It’s good news. He will gain valuable experience leading India. It’s an honour for a cricketer to lead the country. I am happy with the progress he has made over the last couple of years. I think he has come of age.” “He’s been playing very well and scored runs against all opposition. He’s focussed, passionate, very disciplined and is very consistent which is the hallmark of a good cricketer,” said Vengsarkar.
“The hundred he made at Lord’s [against England last season] was brilliant. I watched that innings and rate it very high as it came when India had lost wickets. It was a crucial innings (103) from the team’s point of view as India won that game,” said the scorer of three consecutive Test hundreds at Lord’s. “When I was selector we had picked him twice — for the Emerging Players series (in Australia) and to England (for India A),” said Vengsarkar.
With greats of the game showering praises on him, the onus now is on Rahane himself to deliver.
