India’s captain in all the three formats, Virat Kohli has reportedly asked for a break before the away season begins in January. Many believe that the BCCI should not allow this break as it may hamper the rhythm of the Indian team. The Indian team has been on the road since the Champions Trophy in July. India played a complete series in Sri Lanka, then the Aussies came to India for a limited overs series and currently the Indian team is competing in the limited over series against New Zealand.
Video of the day:
Kohli has been picked for the two Test matches against Sri Lanka in November; however, the squad for the third Test has not yet been picked. According to the reports, Kohli will be granted a break in the third Test and then the limited overs series which will follow.
Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid has dismissed reports of Kohli being denied a break in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka in November by saying that all such news is nothing but a “needless controversy”. Dravid who is currently the coach of India under-19 and India ‘A’ when asked by the media if Kohli needs a ‘mini break’ after playing continuous cricket in the past one year said:
“Everyone needs rest. Virat Kohli will get rest when he wants. I don’t know why there is so much of discussion and controversy. Rotations are needed. There are a lot of matches being played, so you need to rotate the players. I think the management is taking right decision.”
Dravid also expressed his views on the nine-team test championship and 13 teams One Day International league approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC) earlier this. The Test league is scheduled to begin in 2019 whereas the ODI league will begin in 2020. Dravid said:
“I think having the context to especially ODI cricket and series is really important and sometimes in tri-series and bilateral series it can get a bit difficult to generate that level of context, but if you are having that sort of context towards a particular end goal in mind then surely something good can come out of it. If it creates that level of interest and context in bilateral series it will be a good thing.”
Dravid also spoke about his experience of coaching the under-19 and India ‘A’ team:
“I have really enjoyed coaching since the past two years and it has been a great learning experience.”
