Rain looms large over Eden: Groundsman working hard to give a 20-over game
The 9th edition of the Indian Premier League has had its share of thrills and spills and may be even more and has been one of the most exciting tournaments over the years.
With just two games to play, we are no closer to knowing who the top-4 teams are and there are completely no favorites to win the title come the end of the season.
The points table has been so congested and hard to predict and it now looks like the qualification spots will be decided right in the last game at Eden Gardens between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
However, there is some bad news for the teams as if the previous two days are anything to go by, Eden Gardens may not be ready for this clash.
It is understood that heavy rains have lashed the city of Kolkata over the last couple of days and rain is expected yet again on Sunday.
The entire ground had to be covered during the two days which will have its own effect on the pitch.
Cyclonic conditions near the state leaves the ground staff with plenty of work to do even as the sun was shining on the field on Saturday.
An important member of ground staff revealed, “”The outfield is dry. The new covers that were imported before the World T20 are very good and there has been so seepage at all.”
However, the KKR players cancelled their practice session and were not even present in the ground on Saturday but coach Simon Katic paid a visit to the centre of the ground to have a look at the pitch after the covers were removed for a brief period.
The ground-staff also went on to explain the effect the rain will have on the pitch.
“As the pitch was under cover for the last two days, moisture from below has settled on the surface. In the absence of sunlight, the evaporation process has suffered. We call this sweating of the pitch,” he revealed.
He also went on to explain that the sunshine late on Saturday helped them repair the pitch and use a roller on it after more than a couple of days.
The grounds-man seemed optimistic that the game will not have any interruptions and added,” We are hoping that there will be no heavy downpour on Saturday night. As the Met department has forecast a bright Sunday , we are confident of making the ground ready for a full match.”
KKR, if fail to win this game will be out of the tournament which means a washout will also see them miss out on the knock-out stage of the tournament.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad will obviously want a victory to stay at the top of the table but a wash-out at Eden will see them qualify anyway but may be not in the top-spot.
Surely, the ground-staff will have to work high and dry till the start of the match if they are to provide an un-interrupted cricket match for the viewers.
