The quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy 2016/17 which were scheduled to start from December 17 have been pushed a week back to accommodate the two cancelled games. Both the Ranji Trophy games were cancelled due to an excessive amount of smog in Delhi after the pollution caused by burning of crackers on the occasion of Diwali. That smoke and smog-choked and shocked Delhi.
The four-day game between Bengal and Gujarat at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium and the game between Hyderabad and Tripura at Karnail Singh Stadium were the two games which were affected by this issue. The players complained about burning eyes and had breathing issues which prevented them from taking part in the game. No play was possible on the day 1, the match officials waited for the situation to get better but an unchanged scenario saw both the games being cancelled on the day 2. BCCI at that time instead of awarding a point to each to the teams announced to reschedule the game.
The semi-finals and the final of Ranji Trophy have also been pushed a week ahead. The Irani cup will now be played from January 22 to 26. BCCI is yet to the fixtures for the quarterfinals of the tournament.
