Ranji Trophy 2017/18: Defending Champions Gujarat Retain Parthiv Patel As Captain, Piyush Chawla Included In Squad
The defending Champions, Gujarat, have retained Parthiv Patel as the captain of their Ranji Trophy side for the 2017/18 season. It was under him when Gujarat lifted the Ranji Trophy last season for the first time in the history when they defeated the 41 time champions team Mumbai in the final of the tournament. Patel himself led the team from the front playing match-winning innings of 143* to steer the team to a title win.
Gujarat side also includes Piyush Chawla, who had switched his base to the state just before the start of the season. Though he denied the reports, the rumours suggested that the presence of Kuldeep Yadav was the reason behind the switch because Kuldeep had become a permanent member of the team in the last season, overtaking him. Now, Kuldeep is a permanent member of the national side, and he would hardly play any game for Uttar Pradesh this season.
The Gujarat side also includes pacer RP Singh, who was seen commentating during the India-Australia ODI series. Priyank Panchal, Manprit Singh Juneja, Chirag Gandhi, Samit Gohel and Rujul Bhatt are some other members of the team. Siddharth Desai, the 17-year-old youngster, has also found a place. He is yet to make his debut in senior cricket.
As of now, the team will miss out on the services of their key bowler Jasprit Bumrah while he will return to the team as soon as the series against New Zealand ends as he is not a part of the Indian Test team.
Parthiv Patel and Priyank Panchal are the mainstays of the batting line-up whereas Indian bowlers Piyush Chawla and RP Singh will have a crucial to play in the bowling department.
Gujarat will face the Sachin Baby led Kerala in their opening encounter of Ranji Trophy at GS Patel Stadium in Nadiad from October 14 to 17.
Gujarat squad: Parthiv Patel (Captain, Wicket-keeper), Mehul Patel, Priyank Panchal, Rujul Bhatt, Ishwar Chaudhary, Piyush Chawla, Siddharth Desai, Chintan Gaja, Chirag Gandhi, Samit Gohel, Manprit Juneja, Rush Kalaria, Bhargav Merai, Hardik Patel, Dhruv Raval, RP Singh.
