Rashid Khan Appointed As Afghanistan Captain In All Three Formats
Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has been appointed as Afghanistan captain across all the three formats, as reported by TOLO news. Former skipper Asghar Afghan has been appointed as Rashid Khan’s deputy. In fact, Afghanistan cricket board had appointed Gulbadin Naib as the captain of the team just before the World Cup. However, the decision came back to haunt Afghanistan in the ODI showpiece as Naib inexperience of leading the side was palpable.
Meanwhile, Rahmat Shah was appointed as Afghanistan’s Test captain before the World Cup. Furthermore, Rashid Khan was given the captaincy reins of the T20I format. However, by this new decision, the board has put paid to split captaincy.
Rashid Khan to hold the captaincy reins.
In fact, Rashid Khan performance in the World Cup was not up to the mark in the World Cup. Khan scalped six wickets in the nine matches he played. There were a lot of expectations from Rashid Khan but he had failed to deliver the goods with the ball.
Afghanistan had a disappointing World Cup campaign as they finished at the bottom of the points table with no wins to their name. However, they had given a run for their money to India and Pakistan in the league stage.
Thus, Afghanistan cricket board has decided to invest in the young blood. Rashid Khan is one of the best leg-spinners of the shortest format of the game and it would be interesting to note how he will muster his troops in the coming matches.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan will play three ODIs, as many T20Is and one-off Test match against West Indies in India.
On the other hand, Asghar Afghan was released of his captaincy duties before the World Cup. He didn’t even get a chance to play for the team in the first couple of matches. When Afghan was given his chance in the playing XI, he was seen helping Naib in setting up the field. But Naib was not up to the mark in the leadership role and Afghanistan had to pay the price in the crunch situations of the game.
