Rashid Khan picked up 3 wickets conceding 12 runs in 4 overs as he halted KXIP’s progress against SRH. IPL has proven game-changers for bowlers particularly spinners like Rashid Khan which is quite contrary to the common belief that it is a batsman’s game.
Kagiso Rabada is the leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets who is followed by pacer Jasprit Bumrah who has 11. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading spinner with 8 wickets along with Rashid Khan who also has 8 wickets, but his economy rate of 4.83 is the least and is phenomenal considering the IPL is studded with big-hitting batsmen.
Rashid Khan Is On Target Every Time As Every Captain Wants Him In Squad: Sunil Gavaskar
The IPL 2020 has also seen some promising young pacers and spinners rise to the occasion, with the likes of SRH’s T Natarajan, RR’s Rahul Tewatia, and KXIP’s Ravi Bishnoi making headlights, but even the combined experience of these three bowlers is tough to match that of 22-year-old Rashid Khan’s. The Afghanistan spinner proved his value yet again as he picked up 3/12 against Kings XI Punjab who failed to chase a mammoth 202 as SRH won by 69 runs.
Former Indian captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar spoke highly of spinner Rashid Khan, saying that kind of performance is exactly what every captain wants his bowler to deliver. Crediting Rashid Khan for his stellar show, Sunil Gavaskar reckons the leg-spinner is the most sought-after bowler in the IPL as he is on target every time.
“You ask all the captains of the franchises, which is the one bowler that they want in their team, I am pretty certain every one of them will say ‘give me Rashid’. There might be the odd bowler who might get offended but look at the way he goes about his job,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports in a post-match show.
“He picks up wickets, creates dot balls. He is on the target every single time, he has got a nice, well-disguised googly which comes off the back of the hand. A lot of batsmen find it difficult to pick. That kind of bowling, that kind of control, any captain will say ‘give me that bowler'”
Rashid Khan has a phenomenal average of 20.77 and an economy rate of only 6.35 which is much less than other bowlers and has picked up 63 wickets from 52 matches in IPL. In 2020, his average is 14.5, and the economy rate is 4.83. His economy rate is 3rd lowest and the average is 5th lowest which gives an indication that he is a force to reckon with.
Rashid Khan: SRH Have Best Bowling Combination In Last 4-5 Years
SunRisers Hyderabad batted first and posted 201/6 after their openers SRH skipper David Warner and wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow stitched a 160 run partnership for the 1st wicket. Jonny Bairstow missed out on a century by a whisker and scored 97 while David Warner scored 52.
“That’s what happens when you have a good total on the board, the batsmen have to go after you. But you also have to bowl your best deliveries and that’s what I was trying to do. As a team we still have a good combination and the youngsters are taking the responsibility,” he said.
“We have the best bowling combination in the last 4-5 years. We spoke about enjoying bowling and keep working hard in the field,”
SunRisers Hyderabad bowlers led by Rashid Khan then limited KXIP to 132 as pacers K Khaleel Ahmed and T Natarajan also picked 2 wickets. Abhishek Sharma picked up 1 wicket. Abdul Samad was expensive as Nicholas Pooran took him to the cleaners in the only over he bowled.
Apart from Nicholas Pooran’s 77, the rest batsmen could not even score more than 11. SRH misses both Mitchel Marsh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar though after they were ruled out due to injury but they were replaced by Jason Holder and Prithvi Raj Yaara.
